What is Fall Ball?

Fall Ball is WUSA's "off season" program that is designed primarily for training and development of softball skills to compliment our more competitive WUSA Spring Season. Unlike the Spring Season, Fall Ball is less structured and more casual, with the focus on skills development instead of competition. Official standings are not kept. Fall Ball 2017 will feature the following:

  • All girls who register for Fall Ball will be placed on a team. There is no tryout to participate in the regular Fall Ball season.
  • Teams practice once per week allowing flexibility for girls with other fall sports activities. Each team will be assigned one 1 1/2 hour practice slot during the week in the evening. If your daughter has any potential scheduling conflicts due to other fall activities, please indicate those conflicts in the Notes section on the registration page. While we cannot promise that we can accommodate all scheduling issues, efforts will be made to avoid as many schedule conflicts as possible if those conflicts are identified in the registration process.
  • Evening practices for Fall Ball begin the week of September 4th.
  • Games will begin on Sunday, September 10th, and continue each Sunday afternoon, with the season concluding on November 12th with a double-header tournament in each age group. Our goal will be for each team to play eleven games, weather permitting.

What are the age groups for Fall Ball?

Fall Ball 2017 is open to girls from "softball age" 6 to "softball age" 14. Under ASA rules, a girl's "softball age" is her age on January 1 of the current year. Fall Ball 2017 will include the following divisions of play:

  • 8U Coach Pitch (11-inch ball) for girls ages 6-8 (birth dates in 2008-2010)
In this division, a coach will pitch to the players from a distance of approximately 27 feet. Players born in 2008 should consider playing up in the Fall Ball 9U Machine Pitch Division to get ready to move up the Intermediate Machine Pitch Division in the Spring.
  • 9U Machine Pitch (35 feet, 11-inch ball) for girls ages 8-9 (birth dates in 2007-2008) In this division, players will hit off of a pitching machine from a distance of 35 feet.
Players born in 2007 should consider playing up in the Fall Ball 10U Girl Pitch Division to get ready to move up to the Intermediate Girl Pitch Division in the Spring.
  • 10U Girl Pitch (35 feet, 11-inch ball) for girls ages 9-10 (birth dates in 2006-2007)
This division will include a combination of girl pitch and machine pitch, both from a distance of 35 feet. Players born in 2006 should consider playing up in the Fall Ball 12U Girl Pitch Division to get ready to move up to the 12U Sophomore Division in the Spring.
  • 12U Girl Pitch (40 feet, 12-inch ball) for girls ages 10-12 (birth dates in 2004-2006)
This division is exclusively girl pitch; there is no machine pitch component. Players born in 2004 should consider playing up in the Fall Ball 14U Girl Pitch Division to get ready to move up to the Junior Division in the Spring.
  • 14U Girl Pitch (43 feet, 12-inch ball) for girls ages 12-14 (birth dates in 2002-2004)
This division is exclusively girl pitch. The division will form if enrollment is sufficient to form two or more teams. If it does not “make,” parents will be given the option of playing in the 12U Girl Pitch Division or receiving a refund of the registration fee. Teams formed in the 14U Girl Pitch Division will not have a weekly practice, only games will be played.

What equipment is needed?

Each player will need the following equipment:

  • Glove,  batting helmet,  bat, and mouthguard

Other equipment is also recommended in some divisions including cleats, bat, and sliding shorts/pants. In the Intermediate Machine Pitch, Intermediate Girl Pitch, Sophomore, and Junior divisions, infield face masks are required for the pitcher and 3rd base positions and are recommended for other infield positions as well. Infield masks for the 3rd base position will be provided by the league and placed in each team equipment bag.

Will there be Fall Tournament Teams?

Depending on interest, fall tournament teams may be formed at the 10U age level and above. More information about tryouts for these teams will be made available as details are finalized. In order to be placed on a WUSA 10U or 12U fall tournament team roster, players must be registered for WUSA Fall Ball and will be expected to participate on their assigned WUSA Fall Ball team, in addition to the fall tournament team. Fall tournament teams generally play no more than three to four weekend tournaments in total, beginning in late September or early October and ending in early to mid December. Efforts are made to identify Saturday tournaments and/or round robins in order to minimize conflicts with the Fall Ball schedule.

Team fees, in addition to Fall Ball registration fees, will be required for participation on WUSA fall tournament teams.

How much is WUSA Fall Ball?

The Fall Ball registration fee is $175 for all divisions with the exception of 14U/Juniors, which will have a fee of $100. Except as noted above with respect to the 14U Girl Pitch Division, there cannot be any refunds for registration fees after August 29, 2017. Prior to that time, refunds must be requested by email using the link below. Registration closes on August 29, 2017. Late registrations may be accepted after August 29, if the age group is not full. The late registration fee is $200.
